Cette série met en scène un cabinet d’avocats de Boston dont les difficultés financières l’obligent à accepter toutes les affaires qui se présentent (meurtres, viols...), affaires qui mettent souvent en balance éthique morale et éthique légale.

Pendant sombre d’Ally McBeal, également créée et produite par David E. Kelley, cette série a aussi été le théâtre d’un certain nombre de crossovers, notamment avec Ally McBeal, Boston Public ou bien Gideon's Crossing.

Enfin, elle a donné naissance à une série dérivée, Boston Justice, actuellement diffusée sur TF1.
