Cette famille a été créée par John Edward Gray (1800-1875) en 1825 et ne contient aujourd'hui plus qu'un seul genre d'une seule espèce : Ornithorhynchus anatinus (Shaw, 1799), du genre Ornithorhynchus Blumenbach, 1800.
