Cette page présente la liste des 100 aires urbaines les plus peuplées au monde. Il faut noter cependant qu'il est souvent difficile de les définir avec précision. Ces données incluent les banlieues entourant les villes principales et, parfois, plusieurs grandes villes se trouvent suffisamment proches les unes des autres pour être considérées comme une seule aire urbaine (comme par exemple Washington et Baltimore aux États-Unis ou la zone de la Ruhr en Allemagne).

Dans cette liste, seules les villes principales sont indiquées (les villes de banlieues s'agglomérant autour de celles-ci ne sont bien entendu pas mentionnées). Les données retenues proviennent de l'article correspondant de la Wikipedia anglaise en:List of metropolitan areas by population, mais ne doivent pas être prises comme définitives : différentes sources proposent différentes valeurs et ne s'accordent d'ailleurs pas toujours sur les limites de chacune des aires urbaines.

Le développement des mégapoles s'accélère. Le phénomène est particulièrement important dans les pays émergents (par exemple Brésil et Chine). Il faut noter que dès maintenant, près de la moitié de la population mondiale vit en zone urbaine. Les conséquences prévisibles de cette évolution sont considérables par exemple en matière d'habitat, de transports, d'environnement, d'emploi ou d'éducation.

Il faut également noter que le poids économique ou même politique des mégapoles est également croissant. En conséquence, ces très grandes agglomérations développent de plus en plus de relations de coopération directes entre elles. Un nombre important d'entre sont ainsi membres de Cités et Gouvernements Locaux Unis (CGLU), une organisation mondiale de villes qui travaille en relation direct avec les Nations Unies.
