  • 16 avril 1972 : il est le pilote du module de service d'Apollo 16.
  • 27 juin 1982 : il est commandant à bord de la navette Columbia.
  • 24 janvier 1985 : Commandant à bord de la navette Discovery. C'est la première mission militaire de l'avion spatial.
