Les XVes Jeux Olympiques d'hiver ont eu lieu en 1988 à Calgary au Canada.

- Pour la première fois, les Jeux Olympiques se déroulèrent sur seize jours et trois week-ends.
- Le Canada organise pour la première fois des Jeux Olympiques d'hiver.
- Villes candidates : Falun (SWE) et Cortina d'Ampezzo (ITA)

- Le sauteur finlandais Matti Nykänen remporte les deux concours individuels de saut à ski et obtient une troisième médaille d'or dans l'épreuve par équipes.
- Le Canada est le seul pays à ne pas avoir remporté de médaille d'or alors qu'il était l'hôte des Jeux olympiques (Montréal 1976 et Calgary 1988).
- Une nouvelle épreuve apparaît en ski alpin : le Super G. Elle est remportée chez les hommes par le Français Franck Piccard.
- L'Allemande de l'est Katarina Witt remporte sur la musique du Carmen de Bizet son deuxième titre olympique en patinage artistique.
