Les XIVe Jeux Olympiques d'hiver ont eu lieu en 1984 à Sarajevo en Yougoslavie (actuelle Bosnie-Herzégovine).

- La Finlandaise Marja-Liisa Kirvesmiemi-Hämälainen est championne olympique dans les trois épreuves individuelles de ski de fond féminin.
- Le Norvégien Eirik Kvalfoss décroche trois médailles de trois métaux différents dans les trois épreuves de biathlon
- Le skieur Jure Franko remplit de joie toute une nation en remportant la première médaille yougoslave de l'histoire des Jeux d’hiver : une médaille d'argent dans le slalom géant.
- En compétition de danse sur glace, les patineurs Jayne Torvill et Christopher Dean reçoivent douze fois la note maximale (6.0) après leur interprétation du boléro de Maurice Ravel. Cet exploît restera à jamais inégalé puisque le système de notation a été modifié suite au scandale de Salt Lake City.
