Montréal (Canada) était candidate en compagnie de sept villes américaines : Lake Placid, Bear Mountain, Yosemite Valley, Lake Tahoe, Duluth, Minneapolis et Denver.L'organisation de cette édition fut particulièrement difficile en raison de la crise économique.

- L'Américain Edward Eagan remporte une médaille d'or en bobsleigh après avoir remporté une médaille d'or en boxe aux Jeux d'été de 1920. Il est le seul à avoir réussi cet exploit.
- C'est la première fois que l'on voit apparaître des podiums pour la cérémonie de remise des médailles.
- Les Jeux Olympiques d'hiver se tiennent pour la première fois sur le continent américain.
