Les Jeux Olympiques d'été de 2000, Jeux de la XXVII^e olympiade de l'ère moderne, se sont déroulés à Sydney, en Nouvelle-Galles du Sud, Australie, du 15 septembre au 1^er octobre 2000.

Sydney fut choisie de préférence aux villes candidates suivantes : Berlin (Image:Flag of Germany.svg Allemagne), Istanbul (Image:Flag of Turkey.svg Turquie), Manchester (Image:Flag of the United Kingdom.svg Royaume-Uni) et Pékin (Image:Flag of the People's Republic of China.svg Chine).

[modifier] Lors des cérémonies

Cathy Freeman, Australienne aux origines aborigènes, alluma la flamme olympique. Elle a été choisie comme symbole de la volonté de réconciliation entre les Aborigènes et les descendants des migrants européens. Elle remporta la médaille d'or de la course de 400 mètres.

Les deux Corée défilèrent ensemble, dans les mêmes tenues, et derrière le même drapeau : le profil bleu ciel de la péninsule sur fond blanc, et porté par deux athlètes, un de chaque pays.

Le Timor oriental, nouvellement indépendant et victime de combats contre l'armée indonésienne, fut invité au dernier moment par le Comité international olympique. Quatre athlètes timorais participèrent en tant qu' « athlètes internationaux olympiques ».

La cérémonie de clôture mis en scène de manière festive la culture populaire australienne avec le rappel de films locaux (Crocodile Dundee, Priscilla, folle du désert,...). Elle se conclut par un concert du groupe INXS.

Le nageur australien Ian Thorpe remporte à l'age de 17 ans la médaille d'or dans le 400m nage libre en battant son propre record du monde avec une performance de 3 min 40,59 sec.

Fait amusant, la participation d'Éric Moussambani qui a réalisé l'anti-record de 1'52"72 au 100 mètres nage libre (le record du monde et olympique étant de 47"84) : il nageait pour la première fois dans un bassin olympique ! Et pourtant, le public l'a adoré, en scandant son prénom lors de la remise des médailles.
