Les hominidés sont les primates les plus grands, leur poids variant de 50 à 250 kg. Ils sont caractérisés par une marche bipède (parfois imparfaite), une musculature robuste, un gros cerveau et une face prognathe. Tous sont d'excellents grimpeurs. Leur régime alimentaire est omnivore, principalement frugivore, mais la viande n'est pas absente.

La principale de leurs caractéristiques est leur comportement social très évolué avec des interactions très importantes entre individus du même groupe et une grande expressivité faciale permettant de manifester leurs émotions. Tous sont capables de communiquer de façon efficace et tous sont capables avec une éducation appropriée d'apprendre un langage et de manipuler des concepts abstraits. Les hominidés font également partie des rares animaux à avoir conscience d'eux-mêmes (ils se reconnaissent dans un miroir, contrairement au chat par exemple).

Dans les classifications plus anciennes, la famille des Hominidae ne comprenait que le genre Homo, les grands singes étant regroupés dans la famille des Pongidae.

Les progrès de la phylogénie moderne ont conduit à corriger cette classification et tous les grands singes et les hommes ont été placés dans la famille des Hominidae, tandis que les gibbons étaient considérés comme un groupe paraphylétique placé dans les Hylobatidae.

Selon certains auteurs, il convient de distinguer la famille des Pongidae pour les orangs-outans et plaçent, dans la famille des Hominidae, les gorilles d'une part dans la sous-famille des gorillinés et les chimpanzés et les hommes d'autre part dans la sous-famille des homininés.
